국제갤러리는 2010년을 여는 첫 전시로 루이스 부르주아(Louise Bourgeois)의 <Les Fleurs> 전을
개최한다. 이번 전시는 2007년부터 현재까지의 꽃과 모성을 주제로 한 드로잉과 조각작품들을 중심으로 작가의 최근 작업들을 감상할 수 있는
기회를 제공한다. 올해 한국나이로 100세인 고령의 나이에도 왕성한 작품 제작과 전시 활동을 하고 있는 루이스 부르주아는 20세기 미술계에서
가장 중요한 작가 중 하나로 평가되고 있다. 부르주아는 기존의 양식이나 사조로는 설명할 수 없는 독자적이고 개성적인 예술세계를 이룩했으며,
자전적인 소재를 바탕으로 내용과 형식 면에서 끊임없이 파격을 보여줌으로써 현재 활동하는 다양한 미술가들에게 영향을 주어왔다. 국제 갤러리가
2002년과 2005년, 그리고 2007년에 이어 네 번째로 개최하는 이번 루이스 부르주아 전시에서는 24점의 드로잉 작품들과 함께 3점의
조각이 선보일 예정이다.
■ Louise Bourgeois - 루이스 부르주아 ■
1911년 파리에서 태어난 루이스 부르주아는 수학의 예측가능하고 확고한 체계에 끌려 파리의
소르본 대학에서 대수학과 기하학을 전공했다. 그러나 곧 수학적 관념이 불변의 진리가 아니며 이론적 구조일 뿐임을 깨닫고 예술의 세계로 들어서기로
결심한다. 부르주아는 에꼴 데 보자르(Ecole des Beaux Arts)와 에꼴 뒤 루브르(Ecole du Louvre)에서 미술을 공부하고
몽마르트 및 몽파르나스에 있는 화가들의 스튜디오에서 훈련을 받았다. 이 시절에 그녀를 가르쳤던 여러 화가들 중에서도 특히 페르낭
레제(Fernand Léger)는 부르주아에게 삼차원에 대한 관념을 심어주어 훗날 조각가가 되는데 영향을 주기도 했다. 1938년 미국인 미술사학자인 로버트 골드워터(Robert Goldwater)와 결혼하여 뉴욕으로 이주한 부르주아는
2차 세계대전 후 미국으로 유입된 유럽의 초현실주의 작가들에 의해 커다란 영향을 받으며 추상과 유기적 형태의 조합으로 구성된 작업 활동을
시작한다. 작업초기 판화가와 회화가로 활동하기도 했던 부르주아는 1940년대 말부터 기하학의 영향이 엿보이는 조각을 제작하기 시작하였으며
1949년 뉴욕의 페리도 화랑 (Peridot Gallery)에서 첫 번째 개인전을 열었다. 그의 조각은 재료의 다양성과 주제의 과감 성이
강조된 50년대와 60년대를 거쳐, 70년대에는 급속하게 부상한 페미니즘 열풍과 함께 더욱 강렬하고 파격적인 인상을 띠게 되었다.
70년대 말부터 새롭게 주목 받기 시작한 루이스 부르주아는 1982년 뉴욕
근대미술관(MoMA)에서 여성으로서는 최초로 열린 회고전을 계기로 국제적 명성을 쌓기 시작했다. 부르주아는 이후로 미국과 유럽, 남미와 일본
등지에서 수 차례 회고전을 가졌으며 1999년 베니스 비엔날레에서는 황금 사자상을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 현재 세계 유수 미술관들과 주요
컬렉션들에 소장되어 있으며, 2007년부터 2009년까지 런던의 테이트 모던 갤러리를 시작으로 유럽과 미국을 순회하는 대규모 회고전을 가진 바
있다.

“에술의 목적은 두려움을 정복하기 위한 것, 그 이상도 이하도 아니다”

부르주아
루이스 부르주아를 논의함에 있어 가장 큰 특징은 일관성 있는 하나의 틀로 그의 작품세계를 설명할 수 없다는 점에 있다. 그의 작품들은
기존의 어떤 양식이나 범주로도 쉽게 설명되지 않으며 모더니즘이라는 주류의 흐름에 융합되기 보다는 자신만의 독자적인 특성과 자유의지를 반영하는
것으로 유명하다. 작가의 입지 또한 70세가 넘어서야 비로소 주목받기 시작했는데, 이러한 사실은 결코 시대적 사조에 얽매이지 않으며 자신만의
길을 개척해 온 그의 작업태도를 설명하는 하나의 요인이 된다. 이즘과 양식을 거부했던 그의 태도를 설명하듯 그의 작품은 다양한 실험과 도전을
거듭해왔다. 추상에 가까운 조각에서부터 손바느질한 천 조각, 드로잉과 설치에 가까운 조각 등 그의 작업은 하나의 원칙으로 규정짓기에는 너무도
다양한 장르와 소재를 넘나든다. 이번 국제갤러리의 전시에서는 광범위한 그의 작품들 중에서 2007년 이후 지난 3년간 제작된 드로잉 작품들에
초점을 맞추고 있다. 실상 부르주아에 있어 드로잉은 매우 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 기존의 작가들에게 있어 드로잉이 원작을 위한 습작이었다면
부르주아에게 있어서의 드로잉은 예술에 입문하기 훨씬 전, 집안 사업을 돕기 위한 양탄자 무늬 도안을 그리던 어린 시절부터 시작된 예술의
원천이었다. 부르주아는 이 시기부터 종이와 연필이라는 드로잉의 매체 자체가 가져다 주는 친밀함을 바탕으로 마치 자신의 일기장에 기록하듯 소소한
내면의 감정과 기억들을 끄집어 내어 종이에 옮기는 작업을 반복해왔다. 그리고 이러한 행위를 통해 평화와 휴식을 찾고 동시에 치유와 회복을
경험한다. 드로잉의 주요 모티브가 과거에는 격자무늬, 원, 평행선 등의 끊임없이 반복되는 선들이었던 반면, 지난 3년간 작가는 자연과 모성,
여인 등의 보다 구체적인 이미지에 시선을 돌렸다.. 24점의 드로잉과 3점의 조각이 전시되는 이번 전시에서 작가는 꽃과 여성이라는 소재를 통해
강한 생명력과 함께 욕망과 성을 시각화 한다. 열정과 피, 그리고 강렬한 감정을 상징하는 빨간색을 주조로 하는 다양한 드로잉들은 이상적인
안식처로서의 여성과 모성을 그려내며, 나아가 인생의 순환과 인간, 자연의 본성에 대한 관심을 재현한다..“꽃은 나에게 있어 보내지 못하는
편지와도 같다. 이는 아버지의 부정을 용서해 주고, 어머니가 날 버린 것을 용서해 준다. 또한 아버지를 향한 나의 적개심도 사그라지게 한다.
꽃은 나에게 있어 사과의 편지이고 부활과 보상을 이야기한다.” 라는 작가의 언급과도 같이 꽃의 소재를 통해 작가는 소중한 과거의 기억들을 끄집어
내어 치유와 안정을 찾아 나아간다.
